www.in.gr : Watchmaking - An Art Beyond Time

In a world that moves ceaselessly, in a century where technology eliminates the need for minute hands and mechanical mechanisms, there is an art that resists.

An art as old as time itself, hidden in the workshops of patient craftsmen, in the sounds of tiny gears breathing gently within each watch. Watchmaking is not just a technique—it is a philosophy. It is the ability to imprison time within a mechanism and give it life through precision, harmony, and dedication.
Today, very few people understand the depth of this craft. A watchmaker is not merely a technician but a scientist, an artist, a philosopher of time. He is the one who dedicates his life to ensuring that the hands never stop, that the memory of an era continues to beat through its metallic gears. He is the one who, in the absolute silence of his workshop, holds in his hands the delicate balance between tradition and innovation.
In this interview, one of the few masters of time, Dimitris Gerontopoulos, a man who has devoted his life to the art of watchmaking, shares his experiences, challenges, and the secrets of this rare profession. He speaks about the precision required in every repair, the magic of creating a new mechanism, and the passion that guides every movement of his hand.
From the collectible creations that have passed through his hands to the new generation of watchmakers called to continue the tradition, this discussion is not just a glimpse into a profession—it is a journey through time. A journey that proves that, despite technological advancements, the art of watchmaking will never cease to fascinate, to move, and to endure.

A Fascinating Experience and More

– How did you start your career as a watchmaker? Why did you choose this profession?

"I started my career out of a love for precision and the artistry that watchmaking requires. Since childhood, I was fascinated by the mechanics of watches and the beauty of detail. The allure of time, the craftsmanship behind every mechanism, and the desire to create and repair something with eternal value. I must mention that my inspiration to embark on this professional journey was our family friend, DVK, to whom I am deeply grateful."

– What is the most important skill a successful watchmaker must have?

"A combination of patience, perseverance, keen observation, attention to detail, dedication to learning, and continuous adaptation to new technologies."

– What are the most common problems you face when repairing watches?

"Worn-out components due to lack of regular maintenance and incorrect interventions by non-specialized technicians."

– Have you worked on any particularly special or historically significant watches? If so, what was the experience like?

"Yes, I have worked on collectible timepieces from old watchmaking houses and renowned Greeks. The experience is thrilling but demands exceptional attention due to their unique value."

– Why should someone become a watchmaker?

"Watchmaking, as both an art and a profession, is a unique platform that connects tradition with innovation and offers endless possibilities for expression and development. Its collaboration with other arts and professions is not just a trend but a necessity that ensures the industry's evolution and longevity. For those seeking a profession that combines skill, creativity, and prestige, watchmaking is an excellent choice."

– How do you see the impact of technology and smart watches on traditional watchmaking?

"Smart watches offer new opportunities, function as gadgets, simplify and assist in everyday life, but they do not replace the timeless value of traditional watches. They complement rather than compete with them."

– What new techniques or materials have changed your work in recent years?

"I would mention materials such as ceramic, silicon, and titanium, as well as the use of CAD design software."

– How do you balance tradition and innovation?

"I respect tradition, but I do not hesitate to adopt new techniques to evolve."

– What are the current trends in the watch market?

"Watches made from sustainable materials, minimalist designs, and hybrid models (traditional with smart functions). Of course, high-end watchmaking timepieces remain in very high demand."

– Do buyers prefer traditional mechanical watches or more modern designs?

"I believe there is a balance, but collectors and watch enthusiasts show a special love for mechanical timepieces."

Tradition and Technology

– How do you see the future development of watchmaking?

"The future of watchmaking will rely on a dynamic balance between tradition and technology. On one hand, traditional methods of mechanical watchmaking will continue to be regarded as symbols of craftsmanship and luxury. On the other hand, technological innovations, such as smart sensors, AI, and advanced materials, will enhance functionality and customization. The use of modern tools like 3D printing will accelerate creation, while the watch will maintain its role as both a tool and an artistic expression, blending practicality with aesthetics and innovation."

– If you could create a watch for any famous or historical figure, who would you choose and why?

"Leonardo da Vinci, as he combined art, science, and engineering."

– Who is the legendary watchmaker that inspires you?

"There isn’t just one, but I will mention Abraham-Louis Breguet for his pioneering spirit and innovative designs."

– What is the most challenging problem you have faced as a watchmaker?

"The repair of a rare mechanism or restoring a corroded movement without easy access to necessary spare parts."

Advice for Future Watchmakers

– What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue watchmaking?

"A trainee choosing this career has the opportunity to enter a field with high demand, enjoy personal and professional satisfaction, and continually develop in an environment that offers constant challenges and opportunities. With the right education and dedication, watchmaking can provide a long-lasting and prosperous career. My advice focuses on being dedicated, having patience, and investing in continuous education."

"Education from specialized instructors, hands-on experience, continuous training, and a love for the craft."

– Where can someone study watchmaking in Greece? How many watchmakers are there?

"There is a private school (www.watchmaking.gr), which I founded and have been teaching at since 2014, and a public school in Athens. The number of active professional watchmakers with proper training is small, but the profession is thriving."
Passion, Growth, and Financial Prospects

– Is it worth pursuing a career in watchmaking? Are the financial rewards good?

"It is worth it for those with passion. The salary depends on skills and reputation. Learning watchmaking is a decision that combines a love for tradition with a desire for innovation and progress. In a world that is constantly evolving, watchmaking offers a stable yet exciting career for those who choose to master and serve it. For young people training in watchmaking, the financial prospects are particularly attractive. Professional watchmakers enjoy high earnings due to the specialized nature of their work, with experienced craftsmen earning significantly more than the average in other artisanal fields. Additionally, graduates with an entrepreneurial mindset can develop their own watch lines or establish independent repair and manufacturing workshops, capitalizing on the growing demand for unique, handmade products. Building a strong brand in the industry can lead to significant business opportunities and a successful career as an independent watchmaker."

– Isn't it a difficult profession?

"It’s not as difficult as it seems. Yes, it is demanding and requires effort, but it is highly rewarding."

– Have you ever regretted choosing this craft?

"Not at all! Honestly, I never imagined when I first started the immense professional success that would unfold before me over the years. Besides, my love and passion for watchmaking grow every day."
